bah humbug. great for the staff who work in pubs and clubs and for non smokers. but i pay my taxes, i enjoy smoking and socialising, why can't i choose to carry on as it is now? friends have never complained to me about smoky drinking places.

another crazy idea from a government who introduced smoking to us in the first place - remember sir walter raleigh? what next?

i bet they'll still smoke in the houses of parliament and the other royal palaces. do as i say and not as i do..........

why don't they ban hydrogenated fats in processed foods instead, that would be a life saver. nothing's said about that.

Hi, Not only is it banned in every pub, but all work places and enclosed public places.
I think the ban is long, long overdue.
Cigaretts contain over 300 different chemicals, some of which are dangerous, cancer causing chemicals. I would be arrested if i went into a public place and sprayed those chemicals around. It would pose a danger to society.
Last year or so, there was a huge out cry because it was found that some pink food colouring might slightly increase a persons risk of cancer... food was returned to shops, promptly removed from shelves etc... the risk was minimal and yet the colourant was banned...
Can you think of any other product other than cigaretts that is sold with a warning on it to say that it seriously damages your health and the health of those around you? That it causes cancer, heart disease??? etc ... no other product would be legal yet cigaretts still are... Why??? TAX!!!!
The government has made a wonderful step in banning smoking from public places, but what about the health of those who smoke and the children who are exposed to it in private homes???
Hopefully this is only the first step and one day I hope for the sake of all the smokers out there, it is banned altogether.
Yeahhh!!!!

Im a non smoker and I think its a bad idea. When the smoking ban comes into force it will drive the smokers out of the pubs and the publicans will have less customers to make their profits from, thus driving up the price of a pint.

There is PERHAPS a case to have a separate area in pubs which would allow non smokers, children and diners in it then that would keep everybody happy.

I don't smoke, never have and never will but I think that's kind of bizarre. They are doing a lot of that, city by city here in the States. When I read they were doing it in Ireland I figured it would ruin business because that's what people do in bars, drink and smoke but I guess they really must go to see their friends since they are still going. When I visited Ireland and Scotland, our tour group went to pubs but the smoke was enough to make you sick if you are not used to it and that made me wonder if the new laws were so tourists would spend more time and money there. The only ones in our tour bus who smoked were the driver and the guide so they spent a lot of time away from us. We really wanted to spend more time listening to the live music in the pubs but you can only take so much of it. I've always been asthmatic so can't hack much. I wonder how upsetting it is to the people who live there. Well, good luck and God bless

why should no smokers be prominant over smokers ? i agree that you should not be subject to other peoples habits if you dont smoke yourself but where does the fault lie? years ago we had smoke rooms in pubs as well as vaults etc but the pub co,s got greedey and opened these rooms all up so everybodt is subject to everybodies habits what is wrong with going back on this occasion wont every body be happier gee you have to live and let live

The pubs will all have out door smoking areas wont they?

What concerns me about this is what happend to Rachel in Friends where all the decions where made with out here whilst the others were smoking outside.

Will I miss out on crucial bits of conversation sat with the non-smokers indoors. And what about us non-smokers who want to sit outside in the sun?

Hrumph!

To immediately moonshine continues to be made interior the backwoods of Tennessee and Kentucky. the government ought to stay and allow stay they cant administration human nature.

Excellent and a long time coming!

I have nothing against smoking, or smokers. Its the inconsiderate smokers who have no regard for people around them who are eating or inhaling the smoke.
I`ll be much happier when the ban comes into force and I can enjoy a meal out without feeling hoarse afterwards.

I am a smoker, bad habit I know, Honestly I don't mind all that much, even I don't like being in a room full of smoke. What bugs me is the one that they are trying to pass about the smoking in public, including your car. I like to think of myself as a considerate smoker, I understand not doing it around schools and other places, but in my car. I don't need to smoke, that's not the point. This should be a form of discrimination, and that doesn't matter I guess.

It's fantastic! I will be able go out without smelling like an ashtray by the end of the evening. I won't wake up in the morning feeling like I've swallowed an ash tray! I'll be able to breath in pubs. I won't have cigarette burns in my clothes! I won't ever be downwind of a stream of smoke again!
