I would like an orange tabby male kitten. I have tried the newspaper, and looked online.

There is no such thing as a "free" kitten. Kittens need a lot of veterinary attention in their first year of life and need to be spayed or neutered to have healthy lives.

When you adopt a kitten from a shelter a lot of the medical issues will have been covered for you - at about half the price that it would be on the open veterinary market for your "free" kitten.

You could try the newspaper - "free to good home" ads usually abound this time of year. However, those kittens aren't fixed yet and usually haven't had their shots, so you might actually be better of with a kitten from a shelter or rescue - there'll be an adoption fee, but all shots and the spay/neuter will already be included!

Kitten season starts up in late april/early may. You can start looking then but I strongly advise you to adopt a cat or kitten from your local shelter or animal rescue because if not spayed/neutered it will at least have had a vet check. With free kittens you never know what you're going to end up with. I've gotten ferals, cats with feline leukemia, they all come with worms, sometimes ringworm. You could always join a rescue group and volunteer at adoption days or foster cats/kittens in which case you usually get a volunteer discount when adopting an animal and it will be vaccinated and altered.
