My wife has had chronic diarhea for the past 36 hours. She hardly left the bathroom for 6 hours in a row last night! She has little appetite and has had super bouts of flatulence to boot! Norwalk virus?

Norovirus (the new name for Norwalk virus) is usually marked with vomiting in addition to diarrhea. If anything, vomiting is a more dominant symptom than diarrhea.

Other symptoms include fatigue, headache and LACK OF fevers. I have not heard excess flatulence as a typical symptom of noro.

I'd recommend taking her to the doctor and submitting a stool specimen so you have a shot at identifying the culprit.

I hope you are supplying your wife with lots of Gatorade. Also, make sure you both wash your hands often with hot, soapy water to avoid transmitting whatever she may have.

In case it is noro, don't let her prep food till at least 48 post recovery. And when she's done with the bathroom, bleach the heck out of it. BTW, if you have a choice, don't use the bathroom after her.

The current estimation is that noroviruses, the strain of which Norwalk virus is a member, is responsible for at least 50% of all cases of gastroenteritis (inflamation of the stomach and intestines, characterized by nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.)

Norovirus causes acute gastroenteritis that develops between 24 and 48 hours after exposure with a median of 33-36 h, and lasts for 24-60 hours. Severe illness is rare: although people are frequently treated in emergency rooms, they are rarely admitted to the hospital.

If your wife has had diarrhea this severe, It is strongly reccomended that she drink plenty of extra fluids for severe diarrhea rapidly causes dehydration. If she experiences thirst, decreased urine volume, urine that is darker than usual, unexplained tiredness, lack of tears when crying, headache, dry mouth, and dizziness when standing, It is advised that you get her seen at an emergency room for treatment.
