If you passed your car driving test (Category B) after January 1st 1997, you will need to take a further test to drive vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, but not exceeding 7.5 tonnes (Category C1, minimum age 18).

In order to drive a vehicle over 7.5 tonnes (Category C+E, minimum age 21), you must have held the C1 licence for at least 2 years, before taking the test.

You must be over 21 years old (18 for armed forces)and have held a full car (B) license for two years. You do not need a C1 license, you just need to apply for a category C provisional license and have a medical.
