Is there a name for something that backs up/reinforces or protects a program file?

Like a .exe file (that's a program file, right?). What would back up, reinforce, or protect that sort of file, if there is such a thing?

Write protection.

If you want to protect it from alteration right click on it and click properties. When the Properties dialog box appears click the box that says Read-only and Hidden. Click Apply and Ok. This will only protect it from accedental alteration.

To back it up simply copy it to removable media like a floppy or CD. If someone or something (Virus) alters it on purpose then you can restore it from the backup.
