That's a very good question. I personally don't have a problem with pastors and such being paid by the church. I don't know that there's really any precedent in the Bible for it though. The closest thing I can come up with is Acts 6:2-4
"So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, 'It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.'"

Do you honestly believe that a pastor only works on a Sunday? Sorry, but you are terribly wrong about this one. Yes, they should be full time and get paid for that. Not only should they be full time, but it's a 24 hour a day job that is 7 days a week.
They visit people in the hospital and in homes that are no longer able to get outside, counsel people, perform weddings and counsel the couple before they are married, constantly deal with church members needing or wanting something, discuss things with new members, keep up with the visitors and visit them if they request it. They do meetings, have to plan the sunday service or more than one if they have one, do Bible Studies, help to do the budget for the year by figuring out what can be cut and what needs more money. They help with every single age group in the church. They do programs in the middle of the week, not to mention the random phone calls at any hour of the day from someone saying they need help because grandma is dying. There are funerals to do, funerals to plan, baptisms, confirmations, and the list goes on and on.
Being a pastor is NOT a one day a week job. You are basing this on the fallacy that a pastor can get his or her work done in one hour on Sunday morning. I don't speak from guessing what someone does. I'm a pastor's daughter. I know what my dad does every week, and I know how tired he is at the end of the day -- which sometimes isn't until midnight or later. He's extremely dedicated to his job, and he wouldn't dare do anything else. He loves his calling and is doing just as God called him to do.
Go talk to a pastor one day, and go follow him around. You'll find out that it's not just on Sundays.

You said it yourself. Paul didn't want to give the wrong impression. Local pastors don't have that problem. A workman is worthy of his wage.

Pastors work all week long just like everyone else. They do far more than what you see on Sundays.

They are providing a service, for which they are paid for their time, effort, and the benefit of their expertise. There is no shame in that.

Jesus said; you received free, you should give free, no minister of God should be paid for his services to God.
