The very simple bottom line is you have to burn more calories than you eat.
Going a little deeper, it's very important to eat good calories. Otherwise, you'll be hungry all the time, and your body will simply adjust to a lower calorie intake, making it even harder to lose weight.
In general, the worst calories to eat are the ones that come from pure sugar (including fructose, corn syrup, maltodextrin, cane juice, honey, etc.), saturated fats, trans fats, and refined carbs (white flour, white rice, pasta, potatoes). Eat as little of this stuff as you can.
Good calories come from protein (meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy, soy), whole grain carbs (whole wheat, brown rice, etc.), non-saturated fats (especially vegetable fats like olive oil and canola oil) and low-sugar vegetables.
A few tips:
1. Don't skip breakfast. A healthy breakfast jump starts your metabolism.
2. Proteins and (good) fats keep you satisfied longer than carbs
3. Eat small (100 calories or less) snacks between meals
The South Beach Diet is a good one. It's based on the Glycemic Index and follows all the guidelines above. There are lots of websites and blogs about both South Beach and the Glycemic Index with tips, recipes, etc. Just do a Yahoo or Google search.
As for exercise, you should try to build some muscle and do cardio. Not just one or the other. More muscle will increase your metabolism. Studies have also shown that cardio after your strength workout produces better results than doing your cardio first. Alternating days is good too.
Finally, have a goal. 2-3 lbs. per week is healthy weight loss. If you lose weight faster than that, you'll probably put it back on just as quickly.

I found the book to be very informative and easy to read.
I've lost 17 pounds in 12 days, I'm just concerned that I'm losing too much weight, too quickly. I will admit I haven't followed the guide exactly. I'm not sticking perfectly to the listed foods and meal plans (but mostly) and doing very little exercise, but the weight keeps flying off.
It clearly works and if I'd followed it exactly I think it would scare the living daylights out of me because of the amount that I'd lose. So thanks again for the information. I've never purchased anything like this before because they are usually full of trash, but 3WD has been a pleasant surprise.

Short of a terminal illness or flat out starvation the best method is Weight Watchers!!!! Learn how to take it off and keep it off. You can join on line or attend meetings. When I was a teen I lost weight at a rate of about 4 pounds a week depending where I was during my monthly cycle. Just think, by summer you could be 20 pounds lighter! It's the only way to loose effectively and maintain your health.

I found a great way to lose weight fast and keep it off. I do body cleansing. I lost 13 pounds in 9 days and then 28 pounds in less than a month. Cleansing will help the body get rid of impurities. Impurites come from a lot of things like fast food, pollution, food additives and preservatives etc. The impurities get stored in the fat in our body. To shrink the fat, we have to get rid of the impurities by cleansing. This made sense to me and I decided to try a cleanse program and it worked. The weight came off fast and this kept me motivated to keep going, not like other diets where the weight loss it too slow. To learn more call the toll free number 1-877-587-4647 or check out the website. Cleansing was good for me. Good luck whatever you decide to do!

You shouldn't go towards the easy ways like pills and stomach stapling. I recomendt the usual eating healthy and excersising. If all else fails, try adding vitamin supplements to your diet. Go to your doctor first before you start anything though

i know this isn't the answer that you want but the KEY to losing weight is eating a balanced diet and getting some form of exercise.
it's hard and it doesn't happen over night but if you just stick with it the weight will start to melt away.
please don't try pills and creams and strange contraptions that people try to sell on t.v.
