A little of both, I'd say. I base this on my own experience from childhood wherein my aunt literally shoved me up the center aisle of the chapel to stand in front of everyone to profess my love for Jesus and my desire to be saved (neither of which I had or wanted). But I went up there to please her, to get her to leave me alone, (and because she scared the hell out of me). I was seven or eight at the time. Of course look how I turned out. I'm Pagan now. So I think a lot of this early indoctrination into more fanatical religions is going to work against many religions in the future when these kids grow up and realize they can believe what they want.

That could be the reason for some children. However, initially, most children study the religion of their parents out of obedience. It's no different than meeting curfew or doing chores. However, when the child is mature enough to understand, and make decisions on their own, they will eventually decide reject that religion, or choose to practice those beliefs.

Children, by nature, will believe pretty much anything a trusted adult tells them. Why wouldn't they? They believe in Santa, too.

It is mostly the children's necessary reliance on the authority of their parents. The reference has much more on this.

For me it was because I had no choice. I didn't care about pleasing them, and certainly I had fears - but that was about what I learned.

I think it is because children are not given a choice. When they reach adulthood, if they are not too brainwashed, they may recover.
