It is going to vary from state to state. Where I am from the property damage under the liability portion of the policy covers damage to a rental vehicle. In other states, you have to have comprehensive and collision coverage.

Rental companies are really beginning to stick it to customers. I have a couple of clients that rented vehicles, did minor damage to them and the rental car company went out and bought a brand new car, sold the damaged one and billed the customer for the difference. In one case it was 10,000. Buy their insurance! Less hassle if you have any type of claim.

Since you only have the basic liability insurance on your current vehicle, that is all that you will have on the rental car. If you wreck the rental car, you will have to pay the entire repair bill. Your insurance will not pay anything at all. Also, I recently was told by a rental car agent that besides being responsible for the cost of repairs, I also would be responsible for the cost of the car being out of service while it is being repaired. As far as I know, even if you have collision coverage on your current vehicle(which also would cover you on the rental car), your insurance would not cover the cost of the rental car being out of service.

In your case I would definitely buy the insurance. It may be expensive. Last month I rented from Dollar Rent A Car, and they wanted $20/day for just the insurance.

Most car rental agencies won't let you rent without comprehensive and collision coverage on the car. If you don't have it on your personal car, then they will make you buy their insurance on the rental.

Inthe US - usually your own insurance covers you - out of the country - call your insurance - also - a VISA gold card coveres you out of the country for free.. Soo - when you rent out of the country - use your VISA gold. But - I always take the insurance rider at the rental agency b/c if you have an issue - the payoff is automatic & the insurance is cheap. vs the potential hassel. This presupposes the availability of cheap rental insurance - if not cheap - then call your agent.

buy the rental accident insurance
without any full coverage on your own policy and have a accident
you could be held financially responsible for getting the rental fixed

Without Comp, and Coll most rental companies won't let your rent without there insurance. Also if you damage the car, you wouldn't have any coverage to fix it, unless you had comp, or coll, or both..
