The only consistent things about mares are that they are inconsistent.

Some mares leak milk for weeks before they foal.

Some mares don't bag up and leak milk until they're ready to foal-- or later.

It all depends. Get the vet out to have a look at your mare. Also, be aware that gestation periods for mares are subject to variation. A calculated foaling date isn't an ironclad "hard" date by any means, although if your mare really is due on May 5, there's something going on-- that's 'way early.

Is it possible that the breeding date on your mare is wrong? Could she have caught on an early breeding than the last one she had? I've personally known a couple of mares that continued to show heat after they were actually pregnant, and one of these mares was bred while pregnant to an earlier cover.

Basically, you need the vet to tell you what's going on. It may be that your mare is going to run milk until she foals. If that's the case, you may need to feed the foal bottled colostrum if your mare is out of colostrum by that time.

Good luck!

It could be placentitis, call the vet. Sometimes mares just go early, but 2 months is a strech, we just had one 3 weeks early and the mare has gone very early in the past, but everything progresed normally and was fine. I had a maiden a few years back who bagged up 2 months early and was dripping over a month early and went, the foal was huge, sometimes they are just ready. This sounds more serious though.

I would make sure your breeding dates are correct and get the vet out there to help the mare hang on as long as possible.

Call the vet
Is she on a pasture that has fescue or getting hay with fescue ?This can cause all types of dystoicas and early foaling/abortions.
Has she been getting her PBK(pneumabort) vaccs ? (5th 7th 9th month..well she would just be due for the 9th month one now)
