The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and starts out each side of the lower back, splits and travels down the back of the legs, too the foot. I suffer from sciatica too on occasion, so know how it feels. It sounds very much like you are describing. Four months is a very long time for an episode to last, it usually lasts for a few days /weeks. It is important that you pay a visit too your Doctor as soon as possible, as you may have a slipped disc, in your back, which is pressing on the nerve. This can be serious, if left untreated and can leave you with permanent damage. In the meantime ( providing you do not have an allergy) aspirin is recommended as it is an anti inflammatory, and reduces swelling around the joint, ask your pharmacist about other suitable, over the counter alternatives, ( there are stronger medications, but require a prescription ). Alternate ice/heat packs can help too, when applied to the area. cold packs numb the pain while the heat packs encourage circulation. My best advice would be to pay your Doctor a visit, at the earliest opportunity., as advice given on here, although well meant, could worsen your condition, which has not been professionally diagnosed.

It sounds like it could be a pinched nerve. You should see a doctor and they can diagnose what is causing your pain.
