I highly recommend the Canon line if you are looking for a point-and-shoot (or, really, if you are looking for higher end than that, too).
The SD series is smaller, more compact, but they have slightly less image controls (this isn't all that important unless you really want to have a lot of manual settings)
The A Series are slightly bigger cameras, but they have many more manual settings to use.
I know the SD600 just had a price drop. It's a good camera and you can get it for around $200 now. I have the SD700IS (that I use when I'm not using my professional SLR), and I love it. But if you don't think you want/need the Image Stabilization, then I would go with the SD600.
I think you should go and hold the cameras, just so you know what they will feel like to use, but don't be fooled into thinking that smaller=better. Many of the compact/slim cameras have TERRIBLE image quality.
If you feel so inclined, you can look at the review page I'm putting in the source list to read reviews of all kinds of cameras.

it depends if you want good quality pictures or just any random camera. The best one to me is a Canon but i have a sony cyber shot. It works great it is 6 megapixels and the pictures turn out great. it was around $400 but if you are looking for something cheaper there is other good sonys out there.. Check circuit city or best buy

The best kinds of digital cameras are the Digital SLRS or DSLRS, they will give you the best picture, but they are also the most expensive.

I have a Panasonic Lumix. I have had it for nearly 3 years, it's worked fine and I have fallen on it when I was rollerblading and it still works fine.
My dad has a fuji which he is really pleased with and he got my mom a Sony which is pretty good too. If you get a strong brand you should be fine.
