I just heard a conversation with my boss and a guy who I am "friends" with. My boss had the call on speaker - I wasn't eavesdropping. This guy and I have gone out as friends and have slowly been developing a relationship. He sounded really upset on the phone and may be coming over before I leave tonight. We have a "dinner date" that we've been trying to fit into our schedules. Would I be too forward to suggest us going out tonight if he wanted someone to talk to or should I just play dumb and go home.

LOL - I grabbed him when he came in, he was in a big hurry but he briefly told me about it. He gave me a hug and said he'd call me tonight and we'd talk more. So we'll see what happens. At least he knows I'm there for him.

If you want to suggest going out, it may be a great help to him. Don't say anything about the conversation, just invite him to go out for drinks, coffee or whatever. Talk to him and invite him to do the same. Be the sympathetic ear, but let him be the one to broach the subject. He may not want to talk about that, but will appreciate you being there for him.

You mean go home and have him tell you what happen or go out to dinner where he can tell you what happened? And, are you saying the reason why you do not want to do this is because you over heard his conversation-via the speaker being on-you may feel that unless he tells you, you do not need "offer" advice or something?
I mean, give a sympathetic ear. Let him tell you what is going on. Maybe you can make him feel better knowing that someone is there to listen and he will not dread the whole time on him being upset.

sure, ask him out to dinner and suggest that you all talk about life in general, but don't come out and just say something about it, because he may be embarrassed.

I wouldn't mention it, I would act dumb and try to draw it out of him in conversation. Say you noticed he wasn't himself (if he is acting weird) and ask him what's up.

Play it dumb.

You have no idea if this is something he would want you to know. If it isn't you run the risk of him being unhappy that you know. Relationship killer.
