First off, I feel that none of us like having our faith bashed or made fun of. Who would? My concern is that when a non believer post a serious question some of us get up on our soap boxes and preach "down" to them. Or, when a non believer posts a insulting answer to one of our questions, we have a tendency to belittle them for having a faith that is different than ours, or take a stab right back. I feel that this is the opposite of what Jesus teaches us. Now, dont get me wrong, Im all for spreading the Good News, but I feel that from time to time some of us, myself incuded, tend to be a bit overbearing and self-rightoues. How about returning their insults with kindness or prayer? Dont you feel that this would be a better example of a true Christian? I for one am going to try.

You know you have a good point. We tend to deliver the good news as though it were not good. Jesus died for all sinners (us included) and we shouldn't forget that. Thanks for the reminder that the greatest gift is love.

As a happy, open and well adjusted gay man, I guess I'm speaking from the other side of the argument. That said, I too have noticed examples of an absolute lack of respect from non Christians for the opinions offered by Christians. Often, I think there's too much (misplaced) righteous indignation on both sides of the abyss. It's sad that so many people can't respect each other's differences and instead choose to resort to hurling insults. I believe we all have something to offer and that we can all take away something good from our encounters with every person we meet. (No matter how rude or judgemental the person is!)
I appreciate your observation because it makes us think. In response the only thought I can offer is that we are all human and therefore we are all flawed. However, it's people like you that go the extra mile to acknowledge that and make a conscious effort to be aware of it in daily life that make the difference. Too many devout Christians trample all over the teachings of the bible in their quest to spread the word and defend the path of righteousness. Too many atheists occupy their lives with trying to destroy the very idea of god rather than simply not believing in him. Both are examples of hypocrisy.
I'm not sure where I am in my spiritual development, but in life I try to be open minded. Like everyone, I fail from time to time. I will renew my efforts to improve this.
Thanks for posing a great thought provoking question!

Yeah, I think that's the essence of what Jesus was saying. There's nothing wrong with a little debate though, Jesus debated with the all the different religious sects of his day. It's when people lose their cool and just start bashing on the person that gets out of hand. And it's also a pet peeve of mine when all you hear from Christians is hell-fire and brimstone. You don't hear that from Jesus in the Scripture, he didn't try to scare people into going to Heaven by threatening Hell.

Yes I completely agree with you. I think you should read the books "Blue Like Jazz" and "Searching For God Knows What" both of them by the author Donald Miller. I just got done reading "Searching For God Knows What" and I have to say that I am changed because of it. A lot of what he addresses in the book directly answers your questions.

MT 24:4 Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, `I am the Christ, ' and will deceive many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.
