My cat had chronic urinary tract infections and has now been on Hills Prescription Feline C/D food - only available through the vet, for about 2 years. She hasn't had any UTIs since she has been on it (crossing my fingers). It gets rid of the struvite crystals that cause the infections. These cats also need to drink extra water.

Feeding the urinary acidifier as part of the diet helps to reduce urine pH, since the absorption of food tends to increase the urine pH and it is very helpful if the acidifier is absorbed at that time to combat this effect.
There are a number of cat foods available now that promote urinary acidification. I have not seen data comparing them all but I suspect the formula for making foods that acidify urine is well known by now and that most of them work.
The Hill's diet is as good as any that I know of for controlling periodic problems with urinary tract disease associated with crystal formation in the urine. Of course, the corollary of that is that most of the other diets that claim to control urinary tract pH probably work pretty well, too.
But the best way I personaly know of that avoids crystal formation in kitty's bladder is a diet of WET canned cat food of good quality.

I'm with Phoebe.
My Poppy had one once, and the vet sold me an expensive bag of food which she refused to eat.
Long story short, I now feed her a good quality canned food (Natural Balance Venison & Green Pea) and she's good as gold.

yes they do, Science Diet makes one. You usually have to have a vet sell it to you or at a specialty pet food store not petco or petsmart. I buy Feline CD but you need to know what kind of crystals your animal had to get the correct kind of food for your pet. Mine had struvyte crystals so CD was the right kind of food for mine, yours might have had different kind of crystals, ask your vet.

You have to treat a UTI with antibiotics, most likely tetracycline.
