I did the low carb/atkin diet lost a 100 pounds in a year. Been off it now for almost 8 months and didn't gain a pound back. Of course after being on it so long you learn to avoid the fast foods and sweets not that you can't indulge once and awhile, but just don't make a regular basis thing. Also a little jogging, running, walking probably speeds up the prcoess.

I used the SlimFast diet mostly, but I read everything I could about diets and nutrition and exercise and use those things I know I can live with. SlimFast has a website with lots of helpful tips and it's free. there are lots of sites that offer free advice.
