A couple of months ago I realized that when I chew, my jaw makes noise. It's not that loud (I dont even think other people can hear it) but I know its there. Sometimes when I open my mouth wide I can hear it too. I've researched TMJ. I don't get headaches that often, and my jaw never hurts. If the noise is the only symptom I have, do I still have TMJ or can it be something else. I dont know if it matters but I was at the dentist last month and he took x-rays but I dont know if he would be able to tell if I had TMJ since he wasn't even looking for it.

The dentist doesn't find it by looking at an xray. The facial pain clinic finds it by feel. A chiropractor can also treat it. I wouldn't go get it diagnosed until you start having pain. Untill then, pay attention when you chew gum, eat an apple and bagels. I was told NEVER to chew gum again and stay away from apples and bagels.
Try not to grind your teeth, clentch your jaw or lean forward with your fist under your chin.

Just staying away from these things if you think that you have TMJ will help you tremendously.

Go back to your dentist and ask. The Xrays were most likely for decay and not a TMJ assessment. You can have TMJ without headaches or pain.

Well, I'm not sure if you have TMJ but if you are concerned, you could get an over-the counter mouth guard to wear at night and see if it helps. My mom has TMJ and she has to wear a night guard and it was super expensive to get through her dentist. I think these over-the-counter mouth guards are pretty inexpensive and they are supposed to mold to the shape of your mouth.
But other than that, ask your dentist or doctor. I hope it's not TMJ cause it sucks.
