it can be a few different things. i agree with the "nice guys finish last" approach, but i also think i could mean like

people who are "good" as in people who strive too hard to be good at something, like a job, or something like that, and they put all of their time into wanting to do good with this job, and wanting to move up in the company, that they dont have time to have a relationship, or any time to be social. which would make it hard to have friends...and would make them lonesome.

it could also mean that you have to take risks to get what you want. whether that be a person, or anything else, you have to take risks! and risks arent always good...you have to risk being good, and be bad sometimes to get what you want.

Another example of this expression is "Nice guys finish last". This basically means that sometimes in life you have to confront the things you don't like about other people, and more or less take on some of those behaviors to find "love". An example of this would be a guy giving the world to a girl, and then she leaves him. He was a nice guy, but he finished last. Personally, I disagree with that. Eventually if you lead a good life good things come back around to you, even if you're lonesome.

Mark Twain's “Be good and you will be lonesome” is a humorous hint at a defect in the traditional American conception of perfection.

He was referring to men, acting like Puritans, beiing a "Kill Joy", even a "harry hairshirt", as they said back then.

I have also read that Twain was saying do not be aloof, to other men, but look at the link below and see where he used it: a picture caption.

Humans are evil by nature.....so if you are always completely good, there will be nobody there with you to experience this. No one can avoid "sinning".

An example might be if your friends want to go out, but you have to get up early so you don't go (being good), you are left alone. If this makes sense.

I think it means that if you don't take risks, you just be good and reserved for fear if you do anything rash or take a risk, for you'd be breaking the rules, and that will lead you nowhere. Sometimes, we need to take risks, for expieriances to with people and to make freinds. If we just follow the rules and follow whatever our parents say, we'd never be living life the way we want to, to govern our own choices by choosing the people we want to be with.

Why? Because in my experience, every time I was good (or nice) things went slightly better for a few minutes, then someone was bound to always come along and ruin my day.

Maybe people don't like happiness or happy people in the drudge of their boring current existence. (for example at work or school, where other people ultimately make you who you are)

It means that The Cat is having Chicken for Dinner tonight, no doubt about it. The Cat will be steadfast in his pursuit of that darn bird and make that statement true. That's what it means! Darn bird, The Cat needs his beauty sleep! I'll show that cock!

Well, I don't think it's true. Lots of good people are not lonesome. I am lonesome and I don't think I'm good.

That people like interesting people and good people aren't always that interesting. Would you rather hear a story about hookers and car chases or about a flower blooming? A priest is an example, good people but die alone.
