I lived in Israel for a few years back in the late 1990's, and I recall a law before the Knesset to outlaw religious evangelizing. I recalled this because of a question relating to the "Bibles for Israel" program some Christians are attempting in Israel now.

Are the outrageous activities of groups like this legal in Israel? Does the government have any ability to stop such violations of Jewish communal rights?

Evangelising isn't exactly illegal in Israel, but it is frowned upon very heavily, and no wonder. They worked so hard for a Jewish state, they can do without people trying to attack it from within by converting the populace. I think it would be better if people tried supporting peace and reconcilliation movements in Israel rather than missionaries; that's far more important.

First, as a response to the original question posed, I can say that the current law in Israel is that evangelism is legal. It is however restricted to adults as children must have parental consent. I know this because I am a missionary kid and am therefore well aware of the legal factors affecting simple, honest conversations about religion. Second, although no war is perfect and no side is entirely correct, I would simply like to point out that the Israeli Army drops pamphlets warning an area that it is about to be bombed, and only then attempting to bomb the terrorists (who are essentially using their own people as human shields). The terrorists (not necessarily Palestinians) however teach their children in schools that it is noble to fight the Israeli's as early as kindergarten, send their children to fight Israeli soldiers with rocks and even actively pursue school buses and baby carriages as their targets (I personally know someone whose sibling has been killed on a school bus).

Why would it not be legal? Jews are in Palestinian land, not their own all due to the 1967 war. You can't stop people from passing out bibles, Qur'an or Torah. Religion is not law. America put the Jews in Israel/Palestine and America is largely a Christian country. Have you ever heard the quote, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you." ? Jews think they are the "Chosen People"...did the holocaust not humble you any?

if only it were illegal, and all the J4J geeks handing out messianic pamphlets in israel could be arrested and sent back someplace where people are actually open to being nagged and harrassed to convert to the religion that murdered their ancestors.
