He's making it much worse by licking it, obviously. He may end up with what is called a "lick granuloma", which is basically a cut/irritation that is worsened (and sometimes infected) due to a dog licking/chewing at it.
The best thing to do is take your pup to your vet for some treatment. Your vet will probably clean it out, wrap it up, and maybe give your dog an injection of antibiotics to get things going, while giving you a prescription for oral antibiotics too. If your dog chews through the bandages, you may need to use an Elizabethan collar (or E-collar) ... that's the big plastic, funnel-looking thing that dogs often have to wear after being neutered/spayed to prevent them from licking the wounded area.
Good luck!

I have a German Shepard also and she seems to have a lot of skin problems. I have tried many different things but when it came right down to it I ended up having to take her to the vet for a steroid shot. If you dont know what the wound is from then definetly take the dog in, it may be more serious then it looks. If it truely is just a wound that needs to heal...it will! The bag balm is a good suggestion but the dog may just lick that off too! You can also try a no-itch spray...that may help, the dog is probably licking it because it itches! Just like us, when something is healing, it itches!

Well I would take him to the vet to see if it is something major. My german shepherd just had the same thing. She was wrestling with my moms pit bull pup and got some scratches. Well one was right by her "armpit" of her front leg. She was constantly licking it and so what I did was shaved the area and put some vet wrap on it so she couldnt lick it. She did ok with it and her leg has healed and the hair is growing back. I would still check with your vet before you do anything like what I did. I use to be a vet tech so I knew what to do and knew that her injury wasnt bad. If it had been worse I would have taken her in. Another option you may talk with your vet about would be to get an e-collar to put on his head so he doesnt lick at it. If yours is anything like mine they will lick it constantly which irritates it more which makes them lick it more and so on. Talk to a vet an see if it is a major wound that needs treatment or if it is something that can be fixed with an e-collar. Good luck

Use an Elizabethan collar. Pet stores sell them or get it from the vets. I just usually put Neosporin an the wound and wrap it with a sterile dressing unless it's deep or infected. Then it's off to the vets. With no less then 50 animals under my care at any time, I learned from my vet on how to treat them and when to take them in.

you should see a veterinarian for treatment of your dogs wound - it may need a antibiotic ointment or cream. also your pet may need oral medication to fight infection. it may also not be a wound but a skin infection so the doctor can determine what exactly is going on with your pets leg and prescribe the right kind of treatment.

You need to go to the vet and have it treated. They will probably give you some medication for infection. He may need a cone to keep him from licking it.

cover the spot with something and then spray bitter apple on the bandage. He won't lick it or bite it because it will taste bad. Bitter Apple is sold at Petsmart for like $8.

I have horses and when we see this we clean it out with hydrogen peroxide, and then bound there heads so they can`t reach to lick it, it heals better when it stays open and dry, wrapping it will cause moisture.

You could put Bag Balm on it. You should wrap it so he doesn't irritate any more by licking it. Take him to a vet to see if it is infected.

clean it out real good with soap and water then wrap an bandage around no too tight but enough to keep it clean while it heals and add some neosporin or triple antibiotic to speed up healing.
