My zebra finch eggs are due to hatch any day now, can the chicks eat the hard seeds or do they need softer food? If they do what?

You need to be providing soft foods, egg food, fresh foods, and seed throughout the entire breeding cycle. Offer the parents all kinds of foods in addition to the seed. They will feed the chicks.

Take a look at this site. It is geared toward Lady Gouldian finches, but most of the things are true for all finches.
