My friend told me that Aspartame (ingredient in diet pepsi) is bad for you. She also told me that Diet Pepsi causes cancer. Is this true? If not, please don't make rude comments about my friend because she is one of the smartest people I know.

This is an area of great deal of controversy with many unsubstantiated claims about the safety of not only aspartame, but other artificial sweeteners. What most folks tend to ignore is the harm caused by refined sugars. More people die from health problems related to diets high in refined sugars in one year than will EVER die from aspartame or all artificial sweeteners combined.

Drinking a couple of diet sodas a day is far better than consuming regular soda, especially for people trying to manage their weight or with medical disorders such as diabetes. The key is to limit one's soda intake and drink other more healthy alternatives such as water or an occassional fruit juice.

There are so many websites on this topic, too numerous to list, but only a few are unbiased and based on sound science rather than emotion. The National Cancer institute website listed is unbiased and based on on science. Surprisingly the Wikipedia websites have unconfirmed information, especially in light of the recent controversy on Wikipedia. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070307/ap_on_hi_te/wikipedia_credentials;_ylt=AkQI0k0uahieIz_STVmpn2z6VbIF

I have heard this before, too. I saw on TV years ago, I think it was the Today show, that you would have to consume the equivalent of 23 cans of soda a day for it to be really harmful. I don't know anyone who drinks that much, but Im sure someone out there does. Anyway, I know it's not good for you, but I LOVE diet pepsi.

I have heard of this. But I know they tested this in animals.
I love Diet Pepsi so hopefully not.
I wouldn't be to worried about it. There is a lot of people out there that drinks diet pop. If there was a major issue we would know and they would quit making it. But like with anything there is always a chance.

There are studies that have shown that some artificals sweetners can cause cancers. According to my doctor, artificial sweetners in genral are not good for you. Stick to water if you can. If you can't stand the taste of straight water, try adding a little lemon juice.
