I think Monzon has the upper hand in this fight. Monzon has better power and is the bigger man. Even at Leonard's best, I don't think he can beat Monzon in this division. He will be slower and is not really equipped to the division. As you can see, he ran his way towards a controversial victory over the great Marvin Hagler. I think if he tries to run in this fight, Monzon will eventually catch him. Hagler fought Leonard's fight. I think Monzon will box in this fight so as to counter Sugar Ray.
I think that Sugar Ray will be caught with power shots from Monzon in the later rounds. He won't be able to frustrate Monzon since Monzon will take the fight straight to the smaller Leonard. Leonard will have the skill to make it to the distance, though. Ultimately, I see Monzon winning a majority decision. It's his division to rule.

MONZON - W 87 (KO's 57) TF 100 - W pct 87% - KO pct 57% - wins over Benvuti[2], Griffin{2}, Naples, R. Valdez [2] and Briscoe - KO'ed by none - #40 ranked puncher - #11 ranked fighter
One major minus - He only fought one bout in the USA.
He was a matinee idol in Italy and France.

LEONARD - W 36 (KO's 23) TF 40 - W pct 90% - KO pct 58% - wins over Hearns, Duran[2], Kalule, Benitez and Hagler - KO'ed by Camacho (Leonard was 40) - #9 ranked fighter
Retired early because of eye injury (retina)
Won 1976 Olympic Gold medal at Lt Welter wt
He made too many comebacks
Titles at 147, 154, 160, 168 and 175

I first though that this bout would be easy for Monzon. Then I realized that Leonard would only make this bout in Vegas or MSG. The other question would Ray be able to "psyche" out Monzon and get bigger gloves and a bigger ring. Either way it doesn't matter. Monzon agrees to fight in Vegas because it reminds him of Monte Carlo. Monzon is "robbed". Leonard wins a highly controversial/ disputed majority 15 rd decision.

Great fight sir and great question. Monzon was a very strong middleweight and I believe he would impose his will and strength on Leonard in this fight. Leonard would be effective especially using his fast hands throwing combinations a lot like he did in his fight with Hagler. Monzon would land a lot of jabs himself which would close Leonard's eye during this fight around the 9th round of a pretty even fight to that point. In about round 12 I see Monzon pouring it on the smaller Leonard and forcing the referee to stop the fight.

Considering all the trouble Hearns gave Leonard, and Monzon's reach, this one would have been a better fight than first glance lets on. Monzon was as skilled a boxer as Hearns, even if he lacked the power of Hearns, and we saw the trouble Ray had with a tall lanky boxer. In the end Ray solved Hearns, and most likely would have got to Monzon as well.

Leonard by decision.

I would have to say Ray Leonard although never cared much for him he had very good ring skills and could win a match that would swear he had lost.
