my computer is working but my house phone is not. Is there a porblem in my line?

there can be troubles on the line, either inside or outside that can cause you to lose dial tone, but still allow the DSL signal to get thru to you... the first thing i would do is dial into your number with a cell phone, or whatever.. if you hear a busy signal (or the call goes straight to voicemail) chances are that the trouble is inside of your home, disconnect each phone (modem, fax, and satellite that is connected to dial tone) one at a time and check for dial tone after unplugging each device... the last device that you unplug from the jack before the dial tone comes back on is the defective phone etc.. if when you dial your number you hear ringing, but your house phones arent ringing, plug a phone directly into the network interface (usuallay a gray or white box on the outside of your home) if you dont have dial tone here, contact your local telephone companys repair department located on your phone bill...

If you have DSL service your DSL needs only one wire to work, while dial tone needs both legs of wires, so if you have a short circuit anywhere along the line both wires become one, or if you have a broken wire anywhere and only one wire is still connected your DSL will do just fine while your dial tone will not work, call into your number if you get a busy tone, that means that your line is shorted out, that might be caused by a faulty phone, remove all phones and call into your phone with all the phones disconnected, if you don't get the busy tone anymore, that means that one of your phones is defective and is causing the line to short out.
