The elliptical, from my understanding, is better for you because you work more muscle groups, and it's better for your joints. Running is very bad for your knees.

However, I cannot comment of the calories burned. Both machines should have calorie counters. Do the elliptical for 15-20 minutes, and see how many calories you burned. Then do the same with the treadmill and compare. That's probably the best way to find out.

With the elliptical you have the oppurtunity of a full cardiovascular workout than with a treadmill where you have just a lower body workout.

So you would definately be burning more calories. With the elliptical you have the chance to add variety to your workout, which is nice, where with a treadmill you don't get that chance.

The calories are comparable. The reason for thel elliptical is it is easier on your bones (knees especially). The elliptical is comparable to walking 4mph on the treadmill .

The calories are comparable, but remember this (especially for women). When you run in the sand your feet follow a straight line. The eliptical is keeping your feet apart and putting stress on your hips.
