.rar's are similar to .zip files. They're generally a compressed archive of more than one file, though I have seen really large files broken up into smaller .rar's in order to make them smaller downloads (back in the days when most of us were on dial-up). WinRar is a great program for handling them.

RAR can be audio, video, text, alot of things. WinRAR should be able to do it no problem. Does that error occur when you try to do several different ones? If so, you might just be opening it wrong. Normally, its as easy as just a click, not always, though. The most foolproof way to do it is just click on the file like normal, the winRAR interface should appear with the file or files in the window ready to go. Right click on the top folder in the window(or anywhere, really), and click "select all". Then go up to the "Extract To" icon, and click on it. Just select where you want it to go. Its a good idea to have a folder ready just for it, cause sometimes it doesnt automatically put it in a folder, and you could end up with fifty or so files spread out all over the desktop...or whereever. Thats normally not a problem though. If its a program you are trying to do, more than likely after you extract it, you have to then set it up like you normally would. Most of the time with programs, once you have the RAR archive in the window, ready to be extracted, you can just click on the setup.exe file and it will undo the whole thing. Make sure it is the right exe, sometimes there is several. Sometimes you will see an archive(s) inside of the main one. They normally say "data1", "data2"...dont worry about those. I hope I have helped. WinRAR is a nice handy program, I've been using it for over a year now.....you'll get it!!

i don't understand question.have u downloaded a audio/vedio file in rar? if so u may be missing parts of file cheak the sit for remaining parts.or ur downloaded file may be corrupted.if site gives cheaksum file also inwinrar repair option is given
if u are trying to compress then rar/zip are not for video/audio compression mpg/mp3 like things are actually compression technics and u can do this by using xill soft video converter/widows media encoder.or for multiple audio file files use UHRC with large dictionary size!

A .RAR file is like a .ZIP file.. It's just used to compress bunches of files into one file. If you're getting an error, the file is probably corrupt, and you can't do anything about that.

.rar just containes files, rar is a compression method used, similar to .zip.
so rar is just a container holding files
anyway, i strongly recommend 7zip, and Zip Genius.
both programs are free, and both can handle the .rar format
