It's ok to ask, but after you've been talking for a while. It looks sleezy to just walk up and say "So, you got a boyfriend?" Even if she dosen't, with this approach she'd probably say she did.

Go ahead and ask her out whether or not you know. If she wants to go out with you obviously the guy she may be dating isn't doing something right, or she's single. If she does have a bf and is spending time with you she could be having doubts about the man she's with and wants to see if you are any better.

of course it is totally right good and great to ask if someone is already 'taken'. Find a way to ask in your own words, in a friendly way. HER response will tell you lots. She will KNOW why you are asking (duh) and if she says clearly NO not at the moment you are IN. If she hesitates and says kinda or something.. move on.. let it go.. and ask someone else!
