Actually I have been asking that same question to my friends, because I also have dark hair and am wanting to get highlights. And the most popular answer that I have gotten is to go for the caramel highlights, they are very pretty and more natural looking. You can get more than one color highlights. Just look at some of the colors that the salon you choose has to offer and go from there. Good Luck!

hi,
since you had it highlighted blond before, if you liked it, keep your blond. you're right, highlights fade due to air pollution mostly. get a bottle of "shimmering lights" at your local beauty supply store. the shampoo is purple so don't let that throw you, it keeps your highlights bright and gives the rest of your hair a great shine. it also has a conditioner too. definitely stay away from black low lights. there's a burgundy that's real pretty with dark brown hair, but also there are many many blonds to choose from. i have dark brown, mousy color hair myself..and i have had it highlighted every color, but i preferred the blonde's, the softer colored blonde's. i hope this helped! :)

Blonde..
But, since you said besides red or blonde. I would go to the place where you would get your hair highlighted, and ask to see the options and ask them thier opinions on which color it should be.
Hope it turns out good ;)

I purely certainly accomplished that. I even have been loss of life my hair dark brown( natrual dark blonde) for some years. the different day i desperate to enable my sister provide me some highlights nicely it overpowered my hair and my finished hair became into certainly the colour of the highlights wich became into kinda orange in any case i placed a gloomy ash blonde on them and that i became into left with dark ash blonde hair and a pair of low lights from the commencing hair shade, i like it the only harm became into the highlights themselves and once I colored them it certainly gave them a colourful healthful shade quite than hair thats seems washed out from bleach. inspite of the undeniable fact that it is going to take bleaching your different hair (brown ones) to get an throughout golden blonde. And in case you bleach the highlights they'll harm yet youll have some greater healthy strands! purely relies upon on how undesirable you pick it. you ought to frost it via a cap and then do an throughout shade to keep some strands.

Then I recommend Chestnut or another lighter shade of brown. You said you used blonde before and it faded. Red may be too much... Also I recommend a color holding shampoo.

You should dye it dark brown again and then put red highlights. Like bright red. It looks so hot! It's what I have.
