A "pentacle" is, strictly speaking, an object fashioned into the shape of a pentagram (a five-pointed start made of 5 straight over-lapping lines, usually encompassed by a circle too). Some even say the term "pentacle" simply means "altar tool".
Though these days most Wiccans use the term "pentacle" as a synonym for "pentagram", due to the fact that the word "pentagram" has a bit of a negative stigmatism to it. Some also claim that "pentacle" refers only to a pentagram that's orientated one-point-up, but again, this is an incorrect use of the term.
As for what the pentagram means, it's a symbol that's been around for thousands of years so it means different things to different cultures and different religions. Wiccans wear it the most these days, even though they hardly have a monopoly on the symbol. To them it represents the spirit (top point) rising up from matter (the four other points, representing the 4 elements). So it's a general statement of spirit over matter. Though you can read different books from different Wiccan authors and get a variety of additional interpretations.
Many of them claim that one-point-up is "good" and wearing it one-point-down is "evil", but again, this is an oversimplification. Some Wiccans wear the pentagram one-point-down for initiation rites or to symbolize the Greek god Pan (as the shape resembles a goat).

A pentacle or pantacle is an amulet used in magical evocation, generally made of parchment, paper or metal (although it can be of other materials), on which the symbol of a spirit or energy being evoked is drawn. It is often worn around the neck, or placed within the triangle of evocation. Protective symbols may also be included (sometimes on the reverse), a common one being the five-point Seal of Solomon, called a pentacle of Solomon or pentangle of Solomon.[1] Many varieties of pentacle can be found in the grimoires of Solomonic magic; they are also used in some neopagan magical traditions, such as Wicca.
The relationship between the words pentacle and pentagram (a five-point unicursal star) is unclear. The Oxford English Dictionary (Second Edition) treats the two as apparently synonymous, but notes that the actual history of pentacle is obscure. In an extended use, many magical authors treat them as distinct. In modern Tarot decks and in some forms of modern witchcraft, pentacles often prominently incorporate a pentagram in their design.

The five points of a pentacle represent the five elements: Water, Fire, Air, Earth, and Spirit (or Heart). The pentacle represents balance in nature and mind over spirit.
If you want to know more, check out some Wiccan websites. And please, don't let people tell you it's evil. It has nothing to do with the Devil. It's part of an entirely different religion.

pentacle is something fashioned into a pentogram, Pentogram is a 5 pointed star inscribed within a circle. Dont let people tell you it's satanic. In ancient traditions the pentogram signified the 4 ellements and spirit and was believed to either banish negative energy or bring forth good energy(depending on the order you draw the lines in). However it has been adopted by satanism, not sure what it represents to them but it is usually written sideways or upside down(goat-head pentogram) in order to achievethis.
the ancient traditions that use it to banish or bring energies were everything ranging from wicca, paganism to christians themselves. Visit Europe and its many Cathedrals. You will find pentagrams on the ceilings and walls on many if not all of them. Back in time the pentogram was portrayed as a'good' symbol which almost every religion used, but now hollywood and alot of know-it-all christians transformed it into something 'evil'.

A pentacle is a tool used in some Pagan rituals as a symbol for Earth.
A pentaGRAM is a five-pointed star, drawn or worn by some Paganfolk as a symbol of their faith. It's seen as a unification of the four elements + spirit, with spirit being uppermost when the pentagram is upright.

The stars of the USA, Soviet Union(deceased), Red China and many other governments. Buildings like the Pentagon. Ancient Hebrew Mysticism(door on the south), a symbol of the knights Templar, neo-Paganism, Satanism....
The intersesting part is its relationship to the Golden Ratio and to Divine proportions. The pentagram angles define a spiral that never changes shape as it grows, nor does this spirals center of gravity ever change. You find this spiral in seashells, plants insects and even in the structure of the human heart.
The ratio is inside of the Fibbonacci sequence of numbers. This sequence expresses the natural growth rate of a population.
The Divine proportion is also the only ratio that can divide a line both numericaly and geometricaly at the same time.
It carries the meanings of mystery, strength, protection and life.
Only ignorant people think it is related to death or evil.
