The heels make the best toast! They even make good sandwiches, particularly peanut butter and jelly. They are more flavorful. I leave them until last because they keep the next slice, or the next slice, or the next slice from drying out as much since it's not exposed to air in the bag. Since we don't eat loaf bread every day, that can be an issue.

As a kid, we only had white bread -- Wonder Bread. My maternal grandmother and mother would always keep the crust at the ends of the loaf until all the center pieces were eaten -- then they would throw it away, too. Whenever we ate the bread, they would cut off all the crust. I always thought the crust did taste nasty -- like the packaging material.
After I grew up and moved away from home and began buying bread myself, I first switched from soft white bread to a better quality whole wheat bread and learned to eat the crust -- actually it's tastier than the inside part sometimes -- depending on the type of bread. You can toast it and eat it with peanut butter, dry it, use it in meat loaf mixture (as my dad did) or save it up in your freezer and when you get enough, make bread pudding. I am sure others will have more ideas.

yeah, i never use the heel of the bread (that's what my granny called it) and funny as it is, i would do the same thing diggin past that first piece. so recently i moved my guy in and when i threw the heels away he looked at me like i was crazy and said "why are you throwing out perfectly good bread?" so now i keep all the heels for him!! lol!!!

That's Silly! Why you wasting food.
In fact the ends have the most vitamins and protein.
It's the whole crust of the bread that carrys all the vitamins and protein.
dont throw it, feed the birds at least someone is eating...

I love the ends, but you could throw them for birds, or better yet make a bread pudding. Yummy..

I always keep my ends for the birds. If I'm really wanting a sandwich and there's nothing but ends left, I'll eat them though.

From my experience, a lot of people discard the crusty ends of the bread.
I do not! I grew up during the Great Depression here in this country and we learned - not to waste food!
I love them after I have toasted them, put butter on them and placed two soft boiled eggs with plenty of salt and black pepper on them!
A real feast!

you know i do the same thing--except i don't just junk the ends - i throw them out into pieces in my backyard for the birds and squrriels to eat--we get deer here and they love the ends..i think it is just something ingrained in us from childhood--the mental image of a sandwich is comforting--and seeing the ends just doesn't fit that image.

it can be used to make homemade croutons (which call for stale bread) if you feel bad about throwing food away. I usually give it to my begging pets hahaha
