I'm so glad you asked. You MUST understand the difference between these two disorders. Borderline personality describes a person who has minimal internal and external support systems and is living on the ragged edge of "going off", (whatever that means to you). Histrionic describes a tendency to blow things way out of proportion.............Bipolar, (or manic depressive) is expressed, classically by mood swings, (as you know). The most common of these swings is toward depression. Manic depressives usually have a history of numerous depressions. Swings in the other direction are called - manic phase. Mania, in bipolar disorder is less common, but it only takes one episode to make the diagnosis. Mania ranges from agitated & hyperactive to grandiosity or exagerated self importance. Manics may not wait for sliding glass doors to open. They may crash through them. They may spend money they don't have or push relationships that barely exist.........Now, the nuts and bolts, (no pun intended). Manic depressive disorder can be treated and controled. I cannot say the same about borderline personality disorder. Prisons are full of them.

people associate mood swings with BiPolar.....and that is indeed part of the diagnosis....unfortunately there is a great deal more that goes into the diagnosis, that most don't know about or understand. The same is true of BPD, people are just uneducated and quick to make assumptions. Get used to it honey, you waste your time and energy reacting the way you do. And it doesn't change anything or improve your situation.

I believe that there are common symptoms between both disorders but the mood swings w/ Bipolar happen much slower than w/ BPD, where mood swings CAN happen w/in a single day. It really comes down to people being uneducated.

Probably because, even though Bipolar and BPD are very different, their definitions are similar--they both have to do with odd personalities and mood swings.
