My mum has been suffering with really painful hips for several weeks now. It started on one side and then the other. She's had anti-inflammatary tablets from the doctor, but she's in extruciating pain and has great difficulty getting about.
She mentioned to me that she's been having grapefruit every morning for breakfast and is beginning to wonder if the acidity might be affecting her in some way. It seems to make some sort of weird sense - has anyone any ideas about this?

Just to clarify - I think she's actually eating tinned grapefruit rather than fresh

It is quite possible that the grapefruit could be affecting your Mum.
People who have heart conditions are not allowed to eat grapefruit or drink it's juice because of the adverse affects it can have on the body.
Tell your Mum to stop eating it for a week and see how she feels then.
If she improves then it must be the grapefruit.
Good luck.

The grapefruit won't affect her hips by itself, but if she is taking the anti-imflammatory pills or tablets and eating grapefruit, the effect of the medication is probably that the meds will not work well.
I suggest you call your pharmacist and ask them, or read the brochure enclosed with the prescription. It probably tells you not to have dairy or grapfruit products 2 hours before or 6 hours after.

Check with the doctor about the grapefruit. I've heard of quite a few drug interactions relating to eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking medicine.

Check with the drug store
For some reason theres a series of drugs that you can't eat/drink grapefruit within a few hours of taking the drug
I don't remember the whole story, sorry
OR maybe you can google the drug and find out

did you know you can overdose on grapefruit?
They actually have some kind of daily intake on the boxes, do have a look, I know a guy that ended up in hospital for drinking too much grapefruit, sounds crazy I know, but it is VERY true.

I have heard that grapefruit juice can interfere with certain medications. Worth talking to a pharmacist.

Arthritis and other inflammatory conditions flare up when something kicks off the immune system. This can be very individual, which means that what sets it off for her has nothing to do with what sets it off for the next person. But an intolerance to citrus fruits is fairly common, and you can get a food intolerance test from some medical herbalists; you can find them in the Yellow Pages, and they're supposed to be registered with something; I think it's NIMH.

it's possible. Grapefruit give me long term hiccups, for real! She should try not eating them for a while. It won't hurt.

I don't think it's the grapefruit. I have to agree that's not enough acid. Perhaps her hip joint has just worn.
