Most of the motivations are along these lines:

- Family History of Service (My Father was in, My Grandmother was in, etc.)

- Financial/Benefits (3 square meals, a roof over your head PLUS a salary and the likelihood of being laid off is pretty slim PLUS education benefits PLUS bonuses, etc., etc.)

- Service Itself (patriotic or called to the mission)

- Challenge (being part of something that less than 3% of Americans will ever do, overcoming obstacles - proving what you can do)

- Camraderie (anytime, anywhere, you meet someone who has been in the service you will have something to talk about and will usually be able to talk about it for a long time)

I just joined this week. Because I am tired of all the America hating Liberals who keep saying Republicans go die for your war of terror.
I am going to help finish this mission so we can accomplish something before the dems completely defund the military and we are beaten by a gureilla force just like in vietnam when the dem's defunded the war.

My motivation is tha the financial incentives are huge, I get to serve my country and most importantly I can get the real scoop on how it is in Iraq and how the Iraqui people feel about us. Also I want the discipline, structure and the company of men (not boys like those who troll Y!Answers)

I joined Airborne infantry, front lines baby. I plan on being a ranger like my brother.

Been there, done that (Navy, though).

Good: chances for the military to help pay for your education, some good training (if you can get into the right specialty), reasonable pay (if you're not in a war zone) and good benefits, it'll teach you a lot about discipline, self reliance, etc.

Bad: Frankly, even though I'm a vet, I wouldn't join right now -- not and have to go fight a stupid, useless war and possibly get killed for no good reason. I'd wait a bit and see if things calm down. Other downsides: you can earn a LOT more doing the same job in the private sector IF you can get training, if you don't get the right specialty you end up with a skill useless outside the military, you have to jump through a lot of hoops to get the education benefits, anybody who isn't an officer is treated like dirt much of the time.

Your choice...best of luck with making it.

I want to join the USMC, becouse its the tuffest,I want military experience, and even though our politicians have done things that make this country look bad ,I still have an undieying sence of patriotism and love for this country, and nothig would give me more satisfaction than serving in its military and be one of the few , the proud

I'm considering it.
I'm from the UK but want to serve in US military to prove myself worthy to hold American citizenship.
Not frontline service due to the risks, maybe communications (as I can speak French and German) or ground control in the USAF
