This fruit was covered with soft spines. You break open the shell and the inside resembles a grape in taste and light green color. It had one seed inside it, similar to a peach seed. I got it at a food bank. I have never seen it for sale in the grocery store. What could it be?

These spines were nearly half an inch long. I know what kiwi looks like. This is completely different.

Either a lychee or a rambutan. Similar fruit. I think you are talking about rambutan, though.

Rambutan turns brownish as it ages. It's a rarity in fruit stores. A friend bought us some last year.

Lychee - a fruit found fresh when in season at the chinese produce stand They also come dried, usually packaged in a box (dried fruit section). Long ago when I lived in Calif. Central Valley far from the Asian markets, my parents would buy it for us in this form. It's sweet and good, too-- dark colored, soft and not juicy inside the shell.

Sounds like a lychee to me! Kiwi's have lots of little black seeds so I don't think that's it.

I agree with th efirst answerer. Lychee matches the description pretty well. I remember thinking it tasted like grapes too.

Probably a lychee or a longan. Check an Asian Market if you want to buy more.
