I find the bench press puts too much stress on the shoulder joint, which usually leads to shoulder problems or injuries.

Mr.Dan has a good point. If you're not using correct form then you might be hurting yourself with an otherwise superior exercise.
He's also right about being able to increase the weight as you get stronger. That's not something you can do with push-ups,unless you do them with a backpack full of bricks. But that would be unwise.
Join a reputable gym if you can afford it.Good gyms have TONS (no pun intended) of different machines that work your muscles in different ways. You don't want to use the same exercises over and over because you won't get the variety of motions neccessary to fully tax the muscles. The bench press ain't the only chest exercise out there.
The trainers at the gym can also give you advice that you just can't get anywhere else.Ask the buffest people at the gym. They know better than anybody!

The BP only lead to injuries if you are not using proper form.

The push up will help you build some strength from bodyweight...but it is not as good as the bench press. With the bench, you are allowed to add more weight gradually. This will both increase your strength and the size of your chest with the proper nutrition that is. You will never get the same results by just doing push ups.
