He's praying that there's no dog or cat in his Chinese food. It's a common American prayer, uttered any time Chinese food is in the area.

Because that is his custom to pray and thank God for his food and ask it to be blessed. Why be offended by that? Does he demand that you pray as well?

He is just exercising his right to worship as his conscience dictates. You're not obligated to join him, but to show respect you should remain quiet while he prays. Religious freedom is a great thing.

He is thanking his God for the gift of the food, the money to buy it and the job to give him the money, and the ability to do the job and the life and other resources to be able to work...it's really just simple gratitude.

Your co-worker is giving thanks to GOD for his food. i do it too and i get a few stares but the bottom line is that i acknowledge that GOD is our provider. You seem like someone that is polite, so I'm sure when you thank people for doing mundane tasks you thank them, we're doing same thing in all sincerity to GOD.

Why do you even need to ask? If a person wants to give thanks for their meal, let them.

Of course, he could be praying for the food to disappear...
