I was asking a question about what I can do to prevent breakage and split ends and make my hair softer and someone responded saying this :
Sounds like you have some build up, so use a clarifying shampoo once a week only.
What is build up and clarifying shampoo?

Build up is ...like if you use mousse, hairspray, or even ceratain types of shampoo-finesse, it usually causes little whit flakes on your scalp kind of like dandruff. The clarifying shampoo removes all of this.

That was me ! LOL. Build up comes from chemicals in water, and styling products. You can purchase a clarifying shampoo from a beauty salon or supply store. I said to only use it once a week because your hair is also dry and clarifying shampoo will dry your hair out too much if you used it more often. You could also make a paste from baking soda and water and rub it into your ends after shampooing. Leave it sit a few minutes and then rinse and condition as usual. PS, did you know you can click on the name of the person who posts to you and go to their profile page and if they allow it, you can email or im them personally? May make finding additional info out easier next time. Sorry I wasn't as clear as you would have liked. I hate to lose points , but I had to come back and edit this because you got some other peoples misinformation. Build up does not always cause a flaky scalp, and sometimes it can cause hair to be oily feeling if it is build up from a conditioning treatment , but the type I was refering too was along the hairshaft that makes hair feel dry and look dull .

Build up is product that isn't easily washed away. It can make your hair limp and lifeless. Clarifying shampoo's cut through the buildup and grease. I would say only use it once a month, it can make your hair very fragile. To prevent breakage and split ends, use a deep conditioner once a week and get regular hair trims. I deep condition once a week or so and while I blow dry, straighten, and dye my hair, my stylist always tells me how healthy my hair looks. It is especially important to use a good conditioner in the winter, when your hair is the most brittle.

Build up is when your hair gets kind of greasy. Clarifying shampoo gets rid of stuff rather than putting more stuff back in your hair like mosturizing shampoo does.

Try asking at your local drug store, or wherever you happen to buy your shampoo...I'm not too sure myself, but they will most likely be able to tell you.
