No, people don't believe in god because they have enough sense to question whether belief in an unproven, invisible deity is a waste of time. It has nothing to do with feeling 'more important'. Do people believe in a god because they have a low-self esteem and need some invisible man to boss them around?

Which God would that be? There's thousands of Gods spread throughout the worlds religions. Does it make you feel more important to deny those OTHER gods?
There's a quote from Stephen F. Roberts that says:
"I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."
It is only a THEORY is that there IS a God. It's a theory because it is not the natural state of being to believe in a god. Everyone on Earth is born an atheist. (Including you.) You need to be TAUGHT to believe in a god. Which God you believe in depends simply on who you are born to and who is teaching you. Now it is up to the believer to prove his/her theory that not only IS there a God, but that his/her God is the right ONE.

you are describing people who deep down feel there is a god but outwardly deny him to feel more important. these people are confused at best.
when an intelligent person doesn't believe in god, it's because they don't see a reason to. the same way that you don't believe in bigfoot or unicorns. the potential meaning of the concept (god created you to serve him) doesn't matter, it's the EVIDENCE that determines belief. if you want to convince an atheist that your god exists, you better come hard or go home.

That would be a neat trick: "No, I'm not going to church anymore & I will no longer believe in God. It will make me feel soooo much more important."
I understand that you may be fishing for ways to denigrate non-believers, but at least use your imagination and come up with something that makes sense. (Unless of course you feel that somehow that DOES makes them more important.)

Does denying the existance of Santa make YOU feel more important?
Not believing that invisible, non-proveable beings exist doesn't make you feel more important Sparky. If anything, it would make a person feel less "special." They don't have a magical sky daddy looking after every little thing they do.

I don't believe because there isn't a shred of evidence there is a god.
How would that make you feel more important than being the children of an omnipotent being?

I never find it that easy to know what SOME OTHERS AND THEM are thinking or really feel. Now if that question was directed at me as a Christian I might be able to answer. I never understand how it's so clear to some others and them what SOME OTHERS AND THEM are thinking about.>>>>>> passes out from the strain of trying to work it out.

I think it's the opposite. I find religious people sometimes to be quite unneccessarily pious like they think they know far more than the rest of us and full of their own importance. NOT ALL, JUST SOME.
Lots of people in exclusive clubs are like that.
