I don't think you are going to find an easy answer and people will suggest all kinds of ways. I'll simply tell you how it started to work for me. After i had some pretty good paintings done i put together a porfolio to show people i meet, i also printed out some business cards that i give out. Then i posted my artwork on a site as a sort of online portfolio (hellosanantonio.com) which i also mention on my cards. It's also important to let friends and family know that you will take on commissions. Most of the paintings i've sold were not my paintings but paintings people ( who heard of me from someone else) asked me to do for them, and some have become regular clients.

Hey Socrates,
I have never sold a painting. However, people that have gave me these sites and then they get posted in questions like this. You have to pay a fee if you sell from the sites, kind of like Ebay, but for Art.
Here, you simply post a picture of the works, and post a price. Follow the instructions to join, and post.

Make a portfolio, than let galleries know. First find out about galleries in your area, check out their web site and if they are taking in new artists. Send them a copy of your portfolio.
Read a book called art market for artist's and graphic designers.
make sure your work is top quality and treat it like this, if you are not serious about your work other people wont be either.
Check out my web site http://www.piotrwolodkowicz.com it is done on artmaijeur template it is free up to 100 images my URL cost me $10 a year.
