During a break up my significant other told me I was arrogant I thought I knew every thing. Of course this was an exaggeration. On the other hand she said one of my good points was how smart I am. My question is where the line between smart and being arrogant is, and is that just a different point of view that an ex is expected to develop when leaving a smart man?

There is a fine line between smart and arrogant. One of my ex boyfriends was SUPER smart - I mean, there wasn't anything this guy couldn't do or at least figure out. Cars, cooking, electrical wiring - you name it. He even wrote computer programs for fun. (yeah).
Any-who. He was a real @**. He knew that he was much smarter than most and he liked to let people know that. Not only did he let others know that they weren't as mentally apt, he made people feel bad about it. That is arrogance. If he had been a quiet genius, he would have been okay.
Your ex may have said that out of anger. IMHO, arrogance is one of the worst labels in the world....you should ask your friends if they see you as arrogant or at least if they have seen you have an 'arrogant' moment. They might be able to give you some insight.
Please don't get all self-conscious about it and stop being smart (or stop letting it come through). The world needs smart folks like you!

Definitely, a thin line between being smart and arrogance. Just like there's a line line between love and hate. Think about it a little harder and you'll know what I mean. But then again, maybe she thinks you're arrogant because she's insecure that you're smarter than she is, or just plain mad that you two are not together anymore. Either way, there's nothing wrong about being smart so long as you don't always have to prove it- then it starts to lean towards arrogance/being dumb. Smart people can be dumb about things-you know! As long as you're not a jerk, be yourself! Hope I didn't confuse you more!! :)

Arrogance has nothing to do with how smart you are but how you portray yourself to others. It's an attitude, almost as if you think you are better than others and look down your nose at everyone because they aren't as smart, worldly, etc. Your too prideful.
An ex isn't expected to have a different point of view when leaving a "smart" man she's just finally telling you what she thinks of you and your behavior.

Being smart is one thing - but acting like you are better than other people because of being smart is when you are considered arrogant. If you are so very smart you should know what the difference is between being smart and being arrogant.

It's the line between knowing you're smart and acknowledging the fact you don't know everything. And then being arrogant and thinking you know everything when as far as i'm concernec no one knows everything. It's the inablity to listen and take in what someone else has said because you are so fixated on the fact/ thought that whatever you think is the right answer.
Or she said anything that came to mind you would find insulting and ponder upon.....

when a person knows the truth and when its the case of splitting up, they will replace the truth with a lesser quality...its easier to leave an arrogant man than a smart man..thats one more reason to make her feel like she made the right choice..arrogant people remind me of people who are closed minded and think they are high n' mighty and very cocky..and with that someone with that attitude thinks they are everything and knows everything..someone who is smart...looks and understand that everything as different sides, and different answers..they look at the world in every angle..of course there is book smart etc...but in gereral..she knows that your smart...u guys are breaking up she doesnt want to give u any good credit...like i said its easier to leave an arrogant man..one more con to add to her list..but a smart man...give her doubt if she's doing the right thing..

I think there is a line to smart and arrogant. I love smart!!! HATE arrogant!
My boyfriend is smart and at times can be arrogant, but I'm honest to let him know so it doesn't go out of hand. =)
At least she was honest.

you can be smart arrogant is when you think you're better then anyone for being smart
and you brag about it
for example
smart= getting an A on a test
arrogant= showing everyone and bragging

ask someone else who knows you. it could either be that you do have a knack for coming off arrogant, either in what you do or say... or, your ex found how smart you are to be a turn-on and now that you're not together, she's trying to manipulate all your positives into negatives in order to ease her transition into not liking you anymore.
