She came home from school and was crying. She said her ear has been hurting all day. She is very warm, but no fever. She is crying, this kid never cries! I am stuck until my husband gets home from work in two hours. I have no idea what to do, she is never ever sick, or in pain!!! She keeps telling me her ear is beeping. It's all red. Could something ahve happened to it at school or outside? We are way up north and it is well below zero outside with strong winds! Is it the weather? What do I do? I'm freaking out here!

obviously, i emailed my husband and told him that we have to go to the doctor as soon as he gets home. and i gave her some tylenol. it didn't help....and the doctors office will be closed by then. I'm wondering if it's worhty of a visit to the hospital, or if they will give me looks for taking my kid to the emergency room for nothing but ear pain!

I would take her to the doc. Sounds like an ear infection!! call the doc an tell them when you can come!! In the meantime give her something for pain and hold a warm wash rag or heating pad over her ear and it should help!! Keep her sitting up because when you have an earache it is worse when you are laying down!!

Give her some childrens' Tylenol for now and put a warm washcloth on that ear and have her lay down. When your husband gets home I'd take her right to the doctor. Sounds like she has an ear infection which are very painful. Don't wait...ear infections can damage your ears/hearing if they are not taken care of.

Honey, I know ear pain. I've had 6 ear surgeries, and counting. If your 5 year old is that upset, bring her to the emergency room. You're being a good parent. If you'd rather wait for your husband, then get an herbal heating pack (local pharmacy *maybe*) If one is not available, stick a hand towel in the microwave on a paper plate for 30 secs, or until warm-not HOT! Place this on her ear, let her lay down on good ear, with heat pack on other ear. They won't give you looks at the ER, they'll see you as a GREAT PARENT concerned for your childs health.

Sounds like an ear infection. An ostoepathic doctor who specializes in cranial-sacral manipulation can help!

For example:

I would suggest a consultation with an osteopath or cranial sacral bodyworker to see what is going on physically and address the chronic ear infections though direct physical touch. Cranial sacral therapy has helped my son and many of my friends children to either avoid or heal more quickly from ear infections. As a bodyworker myself, I trust hands-on healing work and have seen how powerful a tool it can be. One of my friends' sons had constant ear infections, lots of antiobiotics, etc. Now after a few treatments, he doesn't get them anymore. It's worth a try. I have recently heard of an osteopath in Berkeley, Catherine Henderson, who works with kids. She's booked for months at a time, but I hear she's good. Good Luck.

call the pediatritian, there is a good chance she has an ear infection. If a doctor checks it and determines other wise, then you could discuss other possible causes. Not every ear infection causes a fever!! My infant had excessive gas, and that was a sign of an ear infection, go figure.

Sound like an ear infection. Take her to the doctors when your husband get home. Make an appointment now and tell them around what time you can make it there.

She probably has an ear infection. For now give her a pain reliever for starters!!! The most important part is getting them out of pain. You should never self medicate or ask other people , every situation is different.

This is a hard call--if you can keep your child comfortable, he can wait till tomorrow--an ear infection (which is obviously what's going on) isn't life threatening. BUT if you can't make him comfortable (give him more tylenol--and alternate every couple hours with ibuprofin, too), you will have to go.

Yes, it warrents a trip to the hospital. She needs antibiotics and she needs them now. Give her ibuprofin if the tylenol isn't helping.
