The men who wrote the bible were often terrified of anything that they did not understand or experience themselves. Being men, they did not experience menstruation and therefore did not understand it and most of them feared it. There are all sorts of rules in the bible about Women who are menstruating. You're not supposed to go near them (let alone have sex with one), they're supposed to be separated from the men and other non-menstruating women, and they have to perform certain cleansing rituals before they are good for use.

In those days, a man was not likely to go anywhere near a woman he knew to be menstruating out of irrational fear. Therefore, it's likely that this particular husband probably did not have sex with his wife on their wedding day. However, it's also very likely that the woman in question did not get pregnant until about two weeks following her period so it was just the husband's assumption that she had cheated or was impregnated by an "evil spirit" that allowed him to leave her. Honestly, in biblical times men could leave their wives for pretty much anything.

There is no big deal. It's just very old fear, ignorance, and superstition.

I took an anthropology class at my college and I learned something very interesting from my professor. There is a tribe that believes that women become pregnant while on their period. So they have sex with their women during menstruation in order for their women to conceive. People would think that then how does the women become pregnant? Well the men have sex with the women while they aren't menstruating too. So, they think that women are getting pregnant while on their period so to them it isn't a big deal.

There is no big deal, it happens all the time. Menstruation is no guarantee that the woman won't get pregnant. Any guy who thinks that it is "evil" would be an idiot who doesn't want to take responsibility, I guess there were deadbeat dads in the "Biblical" times too. LOL

That ain't the half of what you'll find in, say, Leviticus. There's a lot of weird superstition about menstruation. My hypothesis is that since physical illness -- from a cold to cancer -- was perceived as an evil spirit, menstruation was seen in a similar light. (Why is blood coming out of this person? She must be possessed!)

That, and the typical misogyny you find all over the old monotheisms.

It is, by all means, possible to become pregnant while on your period. In order to grasp the reasoning laid out in the Bible, you must understand society as a whole at the time. Medical science was unheard of and they were not fully understanding of what menstruation meant or why is happened. Women who were on their cycle were thought of as "unclean" and it was sinful to lay with a woman while she was in this state.
My guess is that the husband probably did sleep with his wife on her wedding night and impregnated her. To avoid being sinful by having laid with an unclean woman, he claimed an evil spirit must have done it in order to absolve himslef of the "sin".
Just a guess

it somewhat is not vulnerable to conceive on an identical time as on your era yet of path not impossible! It was believed that a woman could desire to not get pregnant in any respect on an identical time as on her era, thereore in spite of impregnated her do not have been human. We now be responsive to that ladies folk basically *oftentimes* ovulate interior the midst of their cycle yet some women folk ovulate at a various time of their cyle or two times in a cycle etc. simply by fact of that reason it somewhat is obtainable for being pregnant to happen then purely not a very easy occurence. by using no potential is it uncommon purely not "usual."

Ummmm I think I will throw this questing into the 'too much information' file.

Did you lay with an evil spirit? Does your husband know about it? Does your child have anger issues? Head spins all the way around? Listens to emo music?

In many primitive groups, like Amazon Indians, menstral blood is seen as something poisonous to men. This is why women were seperated from the rest of the group during their menses.

Or, as my husband's favorite joke goes, "Never trust anything that bleeds for four days and still lives."

Hold on a moment, I'm going to go re-read the Old Testament and the New Testament, looking for this story you CLAIM is in the Bible, tho you don't give a citation. I'll be right back.

Not.

Of course women can and do get pregnant while they're on their period. He was pretty ignorant and foolish if you ask me.

Wouldn't a simple DNA test show that he really is the father?
