It was once easy to tell because a print was made of paper and a painting was on canvas. Now you can have a painting on canvas that is just that - a painting done on canvas with oils or another medium, but the paint has been applied by a machine. Many copies can be made of the same painting by a machine which may or may not have a real person add additional strokes afterward.

A print can be textured to look and feel like it's been painted.

I ALWAYS put a loop to it (10x magnification). If it's a print you'll be able to see the dot structure of the printer's screen.
However, if you have a silk screen print, that's a different animal from either a painting or a press print.

on a real painting you can see and feel the brush strokes on the canvas

is it paint on the canvas or is it ink? paint will be thicker and textured.
