Depending on the brand of rice add 1 - 1 1/4 cups of water to the rice in an appropriate sized saucepan. Bring to a boil, then, cover and reduce heat to med-low. Continue with cover on till water is almost gone. Reduce to low and let "steam" for about 10 - 15 minutes.

1. Place rice in pot. Rinse rice to remove excess starch.
2. Add water. The amount of water to add really depends on the kind of rice you have. Some absorb a lot of water, some require less. To be safe make it 1 1/4 cups water for every cup of rice.
3. Cover pot but leave a tiny space for steam to escape through, otherwise it'll boil over. Cook on medium heat for about 15 min. or until it boils briskly.
4. Reduce heat to low. When most of the water has evaporated, cover the pot completely with the lid and cook for about 15-20 minutes more. Don't raise the lid so that rice on the top will puff out nicely.
5. Turn off flame. Better to wait for about 10 minutes before serving.
** adding spices isn't usually necessary, but you may opt to add a tsp of salt or mix in some butter. I like adding a pandanus leaf to make it extra fragrant.

Personally, I rinse the rice first to remove all the excess starch. then, using an electric stove, put 2 cups water & 1 cup rice in a pot, bring to a boil, turn down to a simmer, cook for 10 minutes then shut-off the burner and leave the pot on it for 10 minutes more. NO PEEKING!!! then fluff with a fork and serve. This is basic white rice, you can add spices that you like, garlic, onion, poultry seasoning whatever. You can use chicken broth instead of water as well.

Add dry rice to your pot, pour 1.5 cups of water to 1 cup rice (works better for some reason to use hot water), add salt, stir once, bring to a boil, turn heat to med, cover, I like to cover the pot with a top that has holes designed to steam otherwise tip your top off the edge just a bit so the steam escapes, cook for approx. 15 minutes. (you might have to play with the time and temp here, adjusting it, practice makes perfect) Fork turn when done = perfect steamed rice :-) There is also a rice steamer you can buy from target that steams rice in the microwave in about 7 minutes, it works GREAT!

If you want sticky rice ('cause it sticks together):
Add rice to pan and fill with with water up to the first knuckle. Set on stove and turn to medium. Check in 30 minutes, Keep covered. Usually takes about 45 minutes to cook.
Regular rice takes about 45 minutes.

Obviously you don't have a rice cooker, so here is a good alternative, fill a pan about 2/3rds full with water, hopefully you have a strainer, put in the amount of rice you want into the strainer and set it into the boiling water, after about twenty to thirty minutes it will become thick and it is ready, this way you won't have a sticky mess in the cooker and you don't need to stand there and stir it.

That is so funny because I am preparing the same thing tonight for dinner. Teriyaki chicken and veggies with white rice. Yes, add water and rice to a pot, simmer till the water evaporates. When all the water evaporates, fluff the rice with a fork. Add salt and pepper (optional, but it taste better) and a spoonfull of butter. Mix well and serve. Voila!

Wash and soak two cups rice in cold water.
In another big pot bring to boil 4 cups of water.
drain and add rice and 1tsp salt to the boiling water, cover and cook on slow fire for about ten/twelve minutes. ( you should see holes being formed in the rice. If not cook further for two minutes. As soon as you see holes formed in the rice, cover and cook for one more minute and close the fire.
Allow the rice to stand for ten minutes.
Serve hot. (time your cooking according to your food time.)
If you need to make fragrant rice you may add to boiling water -
3/4 inch piece of lemon grass or
4/5 cloves, 6/7 peppercorns, 3/4 cardamon pods, 1/2 bay leaves and a small stick of cinnamon and 1 tsp ghee or
just spoonful of plain butter or ghee (clarified butter) plus two three drops of lime juice or
8/10 strands of saffron soaked in half cup hot milk for ten minutes.

Steamed rice?
My Black and Decker steamer requires two cups of liquid with one cup of rice and a pinch of salt in the steamer bucket. Fill the water reservoir to the top of the heater element and set the timer for 55 minutes.
