I eat sauteed mushrooms. They're fungus, aren't they? So maybe they just grow.

For common button mushrooms, the mushrooms are grown in dark places in a media of sawdust and peat moss. The largest part of the body mass of the fungus is tiny threadlike filaments called hyphae.

The mushroom life cycle begins when a spore lands in a good environment, like growth medium. It sprouts and hyphae grow out from it. These secrete enzymes and acids that break down the growth medium. This provides the energy and nutrients that let the hyphae grow more. When a single mass of hyphae meets another, they exchange genetic material and grow a mushroom to disperse their spores.

The mushrooms we eat are usually picked before the spores have developed completely because they are most tender at this time. If not picked, the "gills" underneath the cap will release millions of spores into the air as they dry. Even the tiniest breeze will spread the spores. If they should land in a good place, they will sprout.
