White eggs and brown eggs come from different breeds of chickens.Brown eggs tend to be more expensive because the hens that lay them are larger birds; therefore, they eat more food--with the cost being passed on to you. There is no nutritional difference between brown and white eggs, although some people claim that brown eggs taste better.

It is not such a silly question - unless I am silly too! I think it is down to the most common breed of hen that is used in England. In Latvia, where I come from, you can get both brown and white eggs - I prefer brown, but my aunt will not countenance using anything but white. I have just looked the question up on deliaonline.com and she confirms that this is what I was thinking.

There is no difference in the egg, just that the breed of hen determines the colour of the egg shells.

The reason that I prefer the brown egg is because at Easter they can be coloured differently.

some chickens lay white eggs, some lay brown.

The inside is the same.

Most Americans don't like brown eggs, though. I know I don't. They just look funny. Lol.

Egg shell color is caused by pigment deposition during egg formation in the oviduct and can vary according to breed, from the more common white or brown to pink or speckled blue-green. Although there is no significant link between shell color and nutritional value, there is often a cultural preference for one color over another. For example, in most regions of the United States, eggs are generally white; while in the northeast of that country and in the United Kingdom, eggs are generally light-brown.

You can get brown eggs here in america too, if you want. The color of the egg shell depends on the color of the chicken. My dad used to have Rhode Island Red hens, and they lay brown eggs. I guess most chickens in commercial chicken plants are white, so they lay white eggs.

Different kinds of chickens make different colors of eggs - either brown or white. White eggs are the most common in America. If you go to one of our grocery stores, you will find tons of white eggs and only a few brown.

The color of the shell is a genetic trait of the different breeds and cross breeds of chickens.
The two main breeds are Leghorns and Leghorn cross-breeds, Rhode Island Reds and Rhode Island cross-breeds.
The Leghorn lays a white shell and the Rhode Island lays a brown shell. The egg inside is the same.

LOL, we have both colors of eggs. I don't know why or how the white-shelled egg came about, I prefer the brown ones myself.

no they don't bleach the eggs!!! The color of the egg is simply dependant on the breed of the chicken, nothing else. And it means nothing

Also, hens are female chickens...God I'm ashamed to be American...

is it any wonder the rest of the world thinks we're dummies? Just read some of these answers!
