I personally would think a lab/collie would be best. As labs and collies are both kid frienly dogs. Huskies are a little more nippy aswell.

I will end your future suffering. Don't get a husky/border collie mix. Don't do it to yourself. This mix is a bad mix. Too hyper, a runner, smart will do anything to escape, will chew your furniture, jump on your kids, tear the upholstery in your car, will dig up your yard, and if you can get a leash on it....you will be dragged for miles...
Okay, you can thank me now...
The lab/collie, though not my preference for a mixed dog...(the lab side is crazy). The collie side may be more gentile.
Get the dog's history from the shelter. Hire a trainer, to come in and make certain that you are on the right path. (also, a trainer is there for the quick late night phonecall, after the dog is barking incessantly). The trainer will maintain your calmness when handling a shelter dog.
Your doing a great thing. Read as much as you can. Stay calm, use turkey hot-dogs fro rewards....and have fun!

Ontario and Tracey gave some great advice.
The only thing I can add is from personal experience.
We have a 3 y/o black lab/border collie/german sheppard mix.
He's a big boy (88 lbs) but he is the best dog around kids.
He will let my 3 y/o nephew "T" roll on him without a peep and he is protective of him.
God forbid if you scold T in front of him!
He will run over to you and bat you with his paw as if he's scolding you for yelling at the kid.
My nephew can and often does feed him treats and there's never been a problem.
The only problem we have ever had with him as far as people are concerned is he's leery of strange men we meet on walks.
He will bark at the man and then hide behind who ever is walking him.

A nice medium-sized dog is always a good choice, unless you are up to caring for a larger dog. Some small dogs are okay if you have gentle, considerate children. We had Italian Greyhounds, which are not usually good to have with children, but our children were gentle and it worked wonderfully.
I am sending you a link describing all different dog breeds and how well suited they generally are to families with small children. Good Luck! Personally, I am looking to get a Gordon Setter in the future - as my Iggies are getting up there in age at 13 and 15 years old!

i think of which you shouldn't be staring at something over a small spaniel - a cocker spaniel could be the marvelous decrease imo. I also have a sixteen week previous border collie domestic dog and he's large around toddlers, in actuality i think of they are his common element interior the full international - even greater advantageous than his ball! he's purely the size of a small spaniel on the 2nd, yet purely by using rolling over onto his abdomen against the legs of toddlers an identical age as yours he has pushed their feet from under them and brought about them to stumble. it somewhat is authentic that an excellent breeder won't sell to those with toddlers under 5, even 8 at times, so because it is something it somewhat is advisable to think of roughly too. in case you certainly need to ensure, basically decide on a small/medium breed - toy canines, gun canines, pastoral canines. overlook each and all the hear say, go and meet the two the mothers and fathers of the doggies of breed you think of is okay. Spend time with the mothers and fathers on quite a few diverse events and that's advice on the thank you to income an perception into how your domestic dog will behave. Be careful of over-experienced canines as much as naughty canines, given which you in all probability is extremely not waiting to duplicate it until you have adventure. you would be able to desire to continuously go and get an older canines from a rescue. If it does not artwork out, you may return it. If it does artwork out, it is going to not be too lengthy earlier it dies and you'd be greater reassured approximately procuring yet another canines.

Labs are absolutely amazing, but really it doesn't even matter about what breed it is, though some have better temperment than others. Train the dog as though you would a child, if they act out, spank them and teach them no. I have two Jack Russells and they're great with my little brother and sister.

I run a childcare business out of my home and I have a lab/dalmation mix...he's absolutely wonderful and I couldn't ask for a better pet! He lets the kids play all over him, bite, drool, you name it and he just lays there. If you get him outside he's spunky and playful. I think a lab mix would be your best choice. Good Luck!

I am going to recommend going thru a rescue who fosters dog in home, they will assess dogs for personality and compatability and will test them around children and other animals and will know each individual dogs personality.
Retrievers are "generally good with children" but each dog is an individual so there are going to be some who will not do well in a home will children, so unless we know the dogs personally that you are referring to we cannot make a safe assumption.
If you go to www.petfinder.com you can search for rescues in your area and contact them to see who fosters dogs in an in home setting. And then work with them to find a dog who will best suit your family and lifestyle.
