We just found out today that my cat has cancer, what will happen for the rest of his life? (not him specifically, obviously. I know we're not psychic)

PPS. He was a stray. I think the cancer must be very new because about three weeks ago they tested his blood. I don't know if you can find cancer within the blood but they didn't. It's mouth cancer, I guess, because he had like...a sore there.

It would be wonderful if blood tests could diagnose cancer in cats or in humans and they can't. Recently one of my cats has an ultrasound because her calcium levels from the blood work were elevated. Sometimes, I guess, this can indicate a lymphoma.
You should join the Yahoo group: felinecancer. My rescue cat Alexander was recently diagnosed with a cancer in his jaw. I think there are three other people on the group now who are dealing with this type of cancer. There was a new one this morning. It is easy to join and you will be welcome. That way you can keep up with what is going on with my Alexander and the other cats who have this condition.
You just go to Yahoogroups.com and put in felinecancer in a search. Your membership must be "approved" by the list owner and that is just a way to weed out scammers so I am sure you will have approval in the next 24 hours.

Totally admire you for accepting responsibility for your pet by treating the diabetes and now taking on the cancer. It's not anything you have done or haven't done; these illnesses could be due to genetics or age as your cat has had the best of care. Cancer in cats is not encouraging because felines are very good at hiding pain and illness and by the time you can see something is wrong, the disease may be inoperable. Do what you do best with your love and care and maybe you can find help for yourself at www.petloss.com; a forum for people anticipating or recently suffered the loss of a furry family member. They helped me when my cat had cancer. I will pray for yours.

It depends on what type of cancer he has and how far along it is and if you are going to go the chemo route.
My cat had cancer, lymphoscarcoma of the stomach. It was caught very early and my vet suggest chemo because it was the type of cancer that responded well to chemo. It did, he went for chemo for about a year and was deemed in remission. He lived for 4 years, but the cancer came back with a vengenance and we put him to sleep on November 15, 2005. I would definitely do the chemo again for him though.
I wonder if the diabetes is a result of the cancer? Changes in their system perhaps? You can ask the vet his opinion about the cancer (the type, how quickly it spreads, chemo, etc).
I also have a diabetic cat who gets insulin shots twice a day, what we don't do for our animals.
Prayers to you and your cat....

Cancer is not always a death sentence. It sounds like your cat has Squamous Cell Carcinoma (one of my cats had it) and if you catch it early and have the sore removed, your cat has a greater chance of recovery. I have put a website in the sources area for you to check up. You can also check out holistic alternatives on Dr. Marty Goldstein's website (also in sources)
Over the past 20 years of being owned by cats, I have gone through three different cancer experiences with cats: one had Squamous Cell Carcinoma, one with lymphoma (in the lungs), and the last with liver cancer (she's doing great, by the way).
You may also want to get in touch with an interspecies (animal) communicator in your area (see sources) which I have done with great success - great, because it meant that I had closure for both me and my cats. Since I do cat rescue and fostering, I have found this service particularly helpful.
Good luck, honey. This is an emotional time for you and your cat. Get some Bach Flower "Rescue Remedy" from your local health food store for you and your cat to help you cope (you put 4-8 drops under your tongue, for your cat, put some on your finger and massage on the inner flap of her ear - the blood vessels are near the surface and it'll get into her blood stream quickly). Let me know what happens - I care.

I'm sorry about your cat my aunt and uncle had two cat's but one of them passed away from cancer and not to long after their other one was diagnosed with it but he's still alive today and that was a few years ago he got it, I don't think there is much you can do except to hope that he lives a good life for however long he has left.

The time will come when the cancer has progressed to an advanced state that the only humane thing to do will be to put your pet down to relieve his suffering. I experienced the same thing with a companion dog so I do empathize with you.
