My husband and I have a disagreement about this. I say that his family is unusual in that they never used black/white pepper in seasoning or cooking. He contends that I overestimate the percentage of people who use black pepper on a daily basis. I think that there is a very good reason why salt and pepper are on most people's table, whereas he thinks those two flavorings are more historical (from a time when other spices were not as widely available) rather than a reflection of today's cousine. Please help us settle this argument.

His family is very unusual! Pepper is common everywhere I've ever been. Personally, I hate black pepper - I only use white and red, but I keep black pepper around so those who like it can have it.

I see what he's getting at about other spices, but the thing is, most people use salt and pepper in conjunction with other spices. I guess your hubby doesn't realize every time he eats out (other than maybe fast food), there is salt and pepper to some degree in most dishes. Also, tell him to watch the food channel sometime; the various cooks on those shows almost always put salt and pepper on everything. Only salt gets left out sometimes, like if they are using a chicken stock that is already salty or something.

I was told as a child that Black pepper does not digest, the seeds are not good for you.I only use Red and white because of that.My Grand mother was Indian,so what she said was taken serious. The Red is spicey but good. You're probably right, everywhere I go they have Pepper and salt on the table.

I do know some children don't like it, but I have never in my life heard of an adult who doesn't use/like black pepper.

Salt is necessary in cooking, and pepper adds great flavor and depth, so it seems terrible to ignore this basic ingredient.
