Round and Round They Go! When will they stop? Nobody knows!
Circling is common behavior in dogs. No one knows why, but the theory is that they "make a bed" by knocking down tall grass, padding down snow or shuffling stones off the dirt before curling up for a nap. It may be for any of these reasons, but pet dogs will circle anywhere indoors, even in their own beds. It's not reasoned behavior, but is instinctive to all canines, domesticated and wild.

It's just a thing some dogs have. One of my dogs circles around ten times before she will pee, and she'll also hold one back leg off the ground while she's doing it...Sort of a tripod thing. I think the most reasonable answer would be that your dog it trying to tramp the grass down (even if it's really short) so that it doesn't get poked while peeing.

The collective circling of our dogs is what keeps the earth in proper orbit thus preventing it from spinning off it's axis.
I think it's also to let us know we can think of going back in the house.

He is flattening down the grass. Watch your dog when he lays down to sleep, you may catch him doing the same thing. My dog does the same thing. We asked our vet about it. She was told that it was a instint that cause the behavior and to look at it as if it were a personality quirk.

It is something all dogs do. Perhaps at one time it was to ensure that the grass or weeds were flattened allowing for a "cleaner" experience.
